Weekly Summary

This class has had its share of ups and downs. For the first few weeks I struggled, but I kept improving a little each week. I contemplated dropping this class or making it pass/fail, but Im glad I stuck it out. I have learned the most in this class than any other class this semester. The digital world is so complex, but if understood it is a wonderful skill to have and utilize. It can make your life so much easier.

The assignments for the last two weeks were a final project and two tutorials of my choice. Both my tutorials are for assignments I did.

One tutorial is for a video assignment, “Highlight Reels“.

My second tutorial is for an audio assignment, “Make Your Own Ringtone(s)“.

Here is my “Highlight Reels Tutorial“, and my “Make Your Own Ringtone(s) Tutorial“.

My character for the final project is Johnny Manziel. I created an alternative fictional football career up to this point in time of his career. My story portrays Manziel as “Mr. Perfect”, a perfect representative of collegiate athletes and the NFL. Here is my final project.

Again, I learned so much in this class and I am glad that I stuck with it. Thank you to my classmates and Mrs. Polack!

Weekly Summary

Daily Creates: I did three daily creates over the last two weeks. All three were about photography, I did not intentionally choose photography creates, it just happened to work out this way. Here is my week 13 & 14 daily create blog page.

Mashup Assignments: Over the last two weeks, I had to complete mashup assignments of a total of 9 stars. I did three assignments. Each assignment was essentially a image editing assignment.

Mashing Friends And Emojis: My friend, Sean was nice enough to be my model to compare his facial expression to that of matching emojis. The emojis I used were the mask emoji and the hands on cheek emoji. Here is my blog post.

Video Game Cover Mashup: I combined the game covers of Call of Duty Black Ops and Justice League Heroes. My finished game is called “Call of Duty Heroes”. It is a first person shooter video game. Here is my blog post of this assignment.

Your Favorite Teams Mashup: I combined three different sports teams logos. I used the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, Tennessee Oilers, and Atlanta Falcons. Here is my blog post of this assignment.

What is Remix: I created a soundcloud recording of my thoughts on mashups versus remixes. Please listen and follow it on my blog post!

Remix Generator Assignment: Fantastic Imaginary Buildings [Remixed]: Mood Swap“. I created a fictional building using various portions of architecture images I found on google. My building is a government top secret laboratory. Here is my blog post of this assignment.

Participation/Comments: I commented on five posts.

These past two weeks were a little more difficult in regards to the assignments. The remix assignment was particularly difficult because it required multiple pictures that needed editing.  Remix and mashup are frequently applied in our culture and media. The mashup assignments were fun, but challenging. This being said I cannot believe this upcoming week is my last week in ds106. I have honestly learned so much in the digital world from this class. I look forward to finishing this class strong!

Weekly Summary

Over these two weeks, I was required to complete five assignments worth minimally of 16 stars (which I achieved well over) and a required video assignment. I applied my knowledge and skills that I learned from the start of this course, but especially from the last two weeks to complete all the video assignments. Video is a special aspect of technology. It is so important, and helpful to learn in life. I learned a lot this week about video, and I honestly enjoyed making the videos. Below are the assignments I completed along with a short description/summary and a link to my specific blog post of each assignment.

What Do You Love?“: Using YouTube Video Editor, I created a video of my favorite breakfast foods and drinks. My video is a collection of images of various breakfast meals. The video is “I love…Food“. Here is my blog post of my assignment.

Sports Mashup“: Here is my blog post of my assignment. It is a compilation of game winning plays from various sports (NCAAF, MLB, NBA, and NFL). Here is my video, “We Won!“. Additionally here is my blog post in which I describe this assignment in detail.

Highlight Reels“: I compiled knockout highlights of Mike Tyson from his professional boxing career. My video is titled “Lights Out“. Here is my blog post of my assignment.

Favorite Actor/Actress Highlight Reel“: I created a video of a few of Will Ferrell funniest movie scenes of his acting career. Please watch my video “Will Ferrell Highlights” and read my blog post!

Instant Replay“: I took a prank video from YouTube of someone slipping violently. I played the original action in real time first and then repeated the action in slow motion. Here is my video “Caution: Wet Floor“, and my blog post.

Required Assignment (“Have A Conversation With Yourself!“): I am facing a dilemma of how to spend my Sunday Night. Should I watch Sunday Night Football with my friends or study biology? My brains tells me to study, but my heart tells me to watch football. My video is “Decisions, Decisions” and here is my blog post.

Daily Creates: Over the last two weeks, I completed six daily creates. Here is my Week 11 & 12 Daily Create blog page.

Participation: I commented on five blog posts of various classmates. Here is the link to my Participation/Comments blog post.

Weekly Summary

Video Assignments: This week I had to complete two video assignments totaling 8 stars in terms of the difficulty ratings. For both assignments I used YouTube to upload my videos and then embedded the specific link into my blog post(s).

Compilation Video: My title for this assignment is “2015 Lacrosse Goals“. My blog post includes the embedded YouTube link.I love playing and watching lacrosse, so I knew right away I wanted to make a video of great goals from this past season in Division 1.

DIY Product Commercial: This is the second of my two video assignments. It asks to create a commercial advertising a handmade product. Here is my blog post of this assignment, titled “Reed and Cane Basket Commercial“.

Daily Creates: Here is my Week 10 daily create blog page. On each individual daily create post, I included links to the appropriate social media accounts, such as twitter, flickr. Daily Create 1388 asked to mention a personal happy place. The other three daily creates I did were of photography. I uploaded an image of a “horrogami”, altered an original image of myself into a superhero, and my last daily create of the week was to create a cartoon image of myself.

Look. Listen. Analyze: I was asked to analyze a scene from a collection. I chose to study the scene “Maximus Kills Commodus” in “Gladiator”. This is one of my favorite movies, I love the story line, and this movie really shows off how well it portrayed the multitude of film elements. Here is my detailed blog post of the scene.

Reading Movies: I read an article “How To Read A Movie” written by Roger Ebert. I wrote a reflection of it on my blog of my analysis and observations of the article. In short, Ebert talked about his tactics of how to properly critique and judge a film.

Participation/Comments: I commented on five people’s blog posts this week. It was fun to see the various daily creates as well as to read a few reflections. The reflections were well written and very educational.

This week went well. I felt comfortable with all of the assignments for the most part. The most difficult assignment was the film scene analysis. Despite reading Ebert’s article and watching a few clips, I still an not completely familiar with filmmaking. Other than that, I enjoyed the video assignments and the daily creates. Looking forward to week 11!

Weekly Summary 9

Web Assignments:

“Find a Digital Tool”: “Dropbox Digital Tool

This assignment asked to write a tutorial for a digital tool. There are hundreds of helpful digital tools and many I could have chose. I chose “Dropbox” because it is one of the most convenient digital tools available. “Dropbox is a cloud service that you can save anything to. If you download the folder/application, it enables the user to save a video, photo, etc. on a laptop, but it is also saves it your cloud. If your laptop breaks you will still be able to retrieve all the content that is on the cloud.

BuzzFeed Personality Quiz“: “Which SOA Character Are You“?

I picked five characters (Jax, Clay, Opie, Tig, Bobby) to be my results. I created six questions, each question relates to a theme of the television show. There are five answers to each question. Each answer correlates to a character. I generated the answers based off the character’s personality and how I believe they would answer the question.

Storytelling Within The Web“: “Time Machine

This assignment was pretty neat. Using X-Ray Goggles, a digital tool, I altered a Craigslist furniture post. I converted a sofa post to a time machine post. I changed the title, image, and description. I scrolled over the section and click where I wanted to x-ray. The embed html text box appears at the bottom of the page and I have the ability to write anything in that text box. Now I know how people publish fake posts!

All of these assignment appeared difficult, but once I dug into them, they were not as hard as I though they would be. This week’s assignments may be my favorite. I really enjoyed the BuzzFeed quiz. These quizzes are fun to do, because they are quick and scarily accurate. I always wondered how to make one, and now I know! Writing a tutorial for “Dropbox” raised my understanding of it as well as other digital tools.

Radio Shows:

Grumpy Desperados: This is my group’s radio show. We broadcasted about halloween, the history, costumes, events, and a fictional story. Overall I would give our group a 4 out of stars. You can read why I think we deserve this rating and read more about my review on my reflection.

The Verge: I was tasked to reviewing this radio show. It talked about mental and physical health. Right away I was drawn into it because I am very interested in human biology, exercise, and health. I thought this group did a great job, and they are very deserving of a 4.5 out of 5 rating. Please see my reflection for more details of my analysis.

Daily Creates: I did four daily creates this week. This week was a little different for the daily creates. We were asked to add a new component to them, and that component was to connect them into a story.

Story: I am sure you have heard about the snow dance, well have you heard about the criss-cross? I am dancing for excitement in anticipation of homecoming weekend. Last Wednesday I came across a nature stick person. I was really hoping this was not a foreshadowing of this weekend and what I would be like after homecoming. Homecoming weekend was filled with happiness, my happy place is the lacrosse fields but my happy place can be anywhere as long as I am with friends. Finally, the tongue twister. I heard a lot of incidental tongue twisters this weekend.

Here is a link to my week 9 daily create blog page. On each daily create post I linked it to my twitter, YouTube, and/or flickr page.

This week went smoothly for the most part. I was not sure what was meant by hyperlinking and connecting my daily creates together using their separate sites. So I hope my interpretation of the assignment is okay. The web assignments are cool, because I can see my work and even play with my work on the actual web. I enjoyed working with my group for the radio show. It is always refreshing to meet new people and working with groups online will prepare me for the future. Face to face interactions are becoming less and less routine within the workplace. The world is moving too fast for people to arrange a physical and personal business engagement.

Weekly Summary 7&8

Audio Assignments:

We were instructed to complete two audio assignments of our choice that equal a minimum of 5 stars in difficulty rating. I chose “Do You Hear What I Hear” and “Make Your Own Ringtone(s)“. “”Do You Hear What I Hear” is rated 3 stars and “Make Your Own Ringtone” has a difficulty rating of 2.5 stars.

Here are my audio assignments in more depth. “My ears are bleeding”, and “Wake Up, Wake Up”.

Daily Creates:

I did five daily creates this week, and just one last week. For weeks 7&8, the daily creates were a mixture of audio, design, and photography. My favorite daily create was #tdc1377 because the battle of Fredericksburg took place on the campus of UMW. Here is my daily create blog page for these past two weeks.

Grumpy Desperados Radio Show (Blog Post):

Radio Show Bumper (Soundcloud): Bumper

Radio Show Commercial (SoundCloud): Commercial

Radio Show group broadcast (SoundCloud): Grumpy Desperados “9 Lives

Our group communicated via e-mail. We arranged a meeting on October 6th before Fall Break. At this meeting, we talked about the project, and how we will go about completing this project. We agreed on Halloween as a theme because it is coming up and it related to our title “9 Lives” because it is a spooky and mysterious holiday which our title infers.

The easiest part of working as a group is completing my individual tasks. The hardest part is communicating, because we have only met once and since everyone has different schedules the email chain is inconsistent in terms of time of reply.

I volunteered to speak about the history of Halloween. I am unaware of the history and the origins behind the holiday. I stepped out of my comfort zone and pushed myself to learn something new.

Our show holds together as a whole extremely well. Everyone did a great job, and Adam did a splendid job of organizing everything together in a way that makes the most sense and has the best flow. Our goals were to inform and explain to people the ins and outs of Halloween as well to humor listeners with the short story. I believe we accomplished all of our goals.

The past two weeks I have done the best in terms of grades. I am much more comfortable in this class, working with audio projects. I enjoy speaking and working with Garageband made life easy for me in terms of audio recording. I feel good about my assignments. I think I did a good job and I think my ringtone assignment is couple of laughs worth. What I expected from this audio section of the class is what occurred. I have done some audio work before so I was well prepared for these weeks.

Weekly Summary 6

Daily Creates: This week I completed six daily creates. I did not realize I had done six until Sunday. Here are the links to each individual daily create for week 6. Within the blog posts I have links of that specific daily create to my twitter and flickr. All of these daily creates were photography or photographs. My favorite daily create was tdc1359.

Design Assignments: I had to complete five design assignments of a total of 15 stars. I chose “Customize a Pair of Shoes“, The “Ultimate Merger“, “Make a Maze“, “This Assignment Is Suspect” (3 stars) was required as well as any 4 star assignment which I chose to do “Cartoon You“. I will give a quick summary of each design assignment.

Chocolate Sin (This Assignment Is Suspect): My suspects were my mom, dad, and brother. The crime was someone ate my cookie, and I had to find the culprit with the few clues I had.

Nike Roshe Earlysville Special Edition (Customize a Pair of Shoes): This was my favorite assignment, because I collect shoes as a hobby and am a big fan of nice kicks. I customized a pair of nike roshe shoes to correlate with the culture of my hometown. For this assignment I used NikeiD for the customization and then used “Insta Picframe“, an app on my phone to create the image and write the text box.

Gotham’s Maze (Make a Maze): This was a simple assignment, I had to make a puzzle or maze either drawing one or generating one online. I went to Puzzlemaker and created a maze.

FedExxon (The Ultimate Merger): I merged the logos of Fedex and Exxon together using Microsoft Pages. I cropped the photos together and overlapped “Exxon” over “ex” of “Fedex”. This was another simple assignment, but an interesting one to think about because companies do merge together in the real world. I think this combination of two companies could be really beneficial to everyone.

“Reel It In” (Cartoon You): I chose this assignment of all the 4 stars or higher assignments. I had to use a picture of myself and turn into a cartoon version. I chose to use a website that converts a existing image into a cartoon. The image I chose is of me fishing at a pond nearby our house.

Love Is In The Air (Love at First Shot): For this visual assignment, there was a twist involved. The twist was to change something about the original picture. To edit the image I used Pixlr Express. I changed the color hue and sharpened the quality of the image, as well as create a border.

Vignelli Canon Reflection: I read Vignelli’s short booklet on design. He elaborates on his three themes that are central to creative design;semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic. Here is my blog post of my reflection in greater detail.

The Design Safari`: I was asked to take photos of at least four of the ten concepts listed. The four concepts I chose to take a photo of to represent are unity, balance, color, and typography. Here is my blog post of the assignment in detail.

Radio Show: Our team name is “Grumpy Desperados”. To communicate we have primarily been using a group email chain. The title of our radio show is “9 lives”, our theme is about 9 people. We chose this title because it correlates to our logo of cats and we thought it was creative and interesting. Here is our logo.

Weekly Summary

Radio Show Group: I am in a group with Kelsey, Andrew, Adam, and Sean. Our team name is “Grumpy Desperados”.

Participation/Comments: It was fun to see other people’s assignments. I learned how to use new and different resources from commenting on posts. It is also valuable to look at how people did certain assignments so as to help me figure out to do it. For example, I looked at a classmate’s photoblitz and it jumpstarted my photoblitz. I was a little confused at the instructions but looking at my classmate’s work it cleared the air. I commented on 3 photoblitz photos that I thought were the best. Here is the link of my comments on my blog

How to become a better photographer: I took a photography class my senior year of high school so I am aware of photography skills and the basics of it. I took a photo of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I read all the tips, but the three that I incorporated into my photo were “”use the best lens, put a great foreground in front of a great background, and look to the light.” Here is a link to this specific blog post.

PhotoBlitz: This was a fun assignment. It was unique, I enjoy spontaneous tasks because it forces you to follow your best judgement and follow your first instinct rather than contemplate it. I was not able to take all the photos listed in the assignment, but I was able to take seven of the photos. I took them in my house. It made me aware of how many objects are in my house. Here is my link to my reflection in further detail.

Spiffing up Flickr: For this I only created a best set. I picked five of my favorite photos so far from this class to this point in time. Some I edited, and some are original photos.

Daily Creates: Since this week was of photography all the daily creates involved aspects of photography. For these daily creates I usually had to edit two photos together. These were harder than the past daily creates because it required more work and skill. I used Pixlr Express a lot, I had never used it before this week. The first daily create was to select an image and add icons using The Noun Project. My second daily create was to insert someone or something crossing Abbey Rd. I chose the seahawks secondary. For my third daily create I uploaded a short story talking in pirate lingo on soundcloud. Here is a link to my week 5 daily create page.

Visual Assignments: This week I completed three visual assignments. “Apophenia” was a required assignment. The other two were my choice. I chose “Here Kitty, Kitty” and “Color Changer“.

My favorite was “Here Kitty, Kitty“. The reason I liked this the most is because it was the most creative and humorous assignment of the three. The directions were to combine two or more animals together to create a fictional animal. It is funny to look at my “Bearfly” and try to imagine one in real life.

For the Color Changer, I chose an image of the pentagon and edited it so as for it to appear in the midst of a nuclear bomb fallout. This assignment asked to edit an image in terms of color hue and background shade to give the photo another meaning.

The Apophenia was difficult because it required a lot of editing which is time consuming especially when I am still not terribly comfortable with Pixlr Editor. I took a photo of a recycling bin and created four augmented versions of it.

To be expected this week was a lot of photography. It was a lot of work but I completed the assignments to the best of my abilities and I believe I did a good job. The biggest challenge I encountered was “Apophenia”. I just had a hard time thinking of what to do and then creating the augmented pictures using Pixlr Editor took me awhile because I am still figuring that application out. Pictures are worth a thousand words, this is a very common phrase but very accurate. A visual story is much more meaningful because it allows people to see what they are relating and connecting to. Visual images elicit emotions easier because seeing means a lot more than hearing something. I perceive the world in a different way when I have visual references, for example a disaster rather than hearing about it. The only question I have is how to embed a flickr link, such as the best set into my blog post? I copied the link but I could not get an image along with a link. I believe I am getting better at this class though, I am looking forward to next week!

Weekly Summary

Ira Glass & Jae Abumrad Video Reflections: I watched the first two parts of Ira Glass’s segment on storytelling. I took away several nuggets from both of his videos. In the first part , there are two main building blocks of storytelling. One is an anecdote and the other is a moment of reflection. He discusses what he believes are and should be the central parts of audio stories. An audio story generally should start with an action and must have a story. The other central theme of audio stories is to raise questions and then answer those questions. He explains a moment of reflection as the purpose of the story. However Ira complains that many video pods usually have only one of the two building blocks. Either it has a great anecdote but means nothing or does have a moment of reflection but no action.

In Ira’s second part , he talks about the difficulty of finding a decent story. The key takeaway I got from this specific video is to kill the crap and enjoy the killing. You have to be tough to create anything good. Failing is okay, because it creates a situation to become lucky. A lot of broadcasting in its purest way is about luck. He goes on to say that broadcasters should only want to make something memorable or special, not mediocre.

I then watched Jad Abumrad’s “How Radio Creates Empathy” video segment. Radio is a deep act of coauthorship. He uses an example of describing the sun, he paints a picture but the listener is holding the paintbrush and has the ability to draw it as he or she imagines it. There is an immediacy with others through radio because of coauthorship. He says that radio should be dead, but because there is an intimacy that exists it inoculates this source of technology from ever dying. With radio there exists freedom of imagination and creativity. People can perceive what they hear in their own images. One person can imagine something completely different than other person despite them hearing the same words. I hope radio does not die, because if it does then so does our creativity and imagination.

Radio Story Reflection: I chose to listen to “How I got Into College”. It is a podcast by Ira Glass of the College application process. The beginning of the podcasts begins with Ira asking Columbia University students how they were accepted. Most of the students answer something along the lines of “I have no idea”. The podcast uses the real interview responses, which switches up the audio. It then transitions to a dialogue between Ira and an admissions officer at Georgia Tech. The admissions officers brings up emails he receives from parents impersonating their child. Parents use words such as “cool and awesome” because they think that is what kids say. However those are very inappropriate words in regards to an application and professional email. The majority of the podcast revolves around applications and comments from both Ira and the admissions officer.

I instantly noticed the background music in this segment. When the video segment changed, there is a fast-tempo, upbeat instrumental to go along with the transition. In Part 2 he tells a story with Michael Lewis. As they speak, music will play at specific points. Elevator music plays as Michael Lewis describes his situation of when he got into trouble. An upbeat piano composition starts as Michael explains why he likes the story. Both speakers elaborate on the meaning of the story to him. The music appears to direct our attention to the moment of reflection.

A guitar or mariachi beat plays as Michael speaks of the positive perspective that Amir has on all this misfortune that surrounds him. The musics ceases and what seems like polka music replaces the guitar, while Michael talks about his family struggles. Then, very loud music plays as Amir speaks of reading, which could be hinting at his learning since it is of applying to college. Upbeat and fast pace music plays when Amir goes with his teacher to apply to a new school, this section of music makes sense and correlates to what is happening. This music then plays on and off again while Amir asks to attend a private school.

I do not think the music matches the story that well, because the emotions of the story did not match the type of music at the particular times. For example, Amir is talking about a bunny being abused, and in the background there is upbeat music playing, which traditionally implies joy and happiness. The majority of the music throughout this podcast is to highlight transitions and possibly lapses in the story. Such as Amir’s story is not completely revealed, whereas instead music is played.

Audio Assignments: These assignments were my favorite part of this week. My first audio assignment was a “radio bumper” For this project I used Garageband. I recorded my speech of the dialogue using the “vocals” instrument. The voice over music is an instrumental bass which I copied and pasted from YouTube.

My favorite is the sound effect story. I am so conditioned to dialogue within stories so it was strange, but using only sounds made it much more interesting and it enhanced the story. My sound effect story is of a convenience store robbery and murder. A man parks his car, opens the door, walks to the cash register, pumps his shotgun, the cash register opens, he then shoots the cash clerk, walks out the door, and drives away.

The “familiar sounds” assignment was fun because as I was doing it, I thought of my home and how much I love my home. I chose one that was always created. This assignment called to create sounds that are familiar to us, but may be strange to others. I included crickets chirping, frogs croaking, an airplane, and a ceiling fan. These sounds exists at my house. The crickets and frogs are pretty noisy every night especially in the warmer months. I live in the woods and in front of our house we have a small pond where the crickets and frogs live. I live close to an airport so every few nights I will hear an airplane taking off or landing. Finally, I like to sleep with my ceiling fan running faintly, so that is why I chose the sound of a fan.

For all three assignments I used Garageband to paste my audio from YouTube and then once I finished my project on Garageband I saved it as an MP3 file and uploaded each project to SoundCloud and Twitter separately.

Daily Creates: The first daily create of this week was to create a motivational book cover. I went to makeameme and picked the image of Maximus from the movie “Gladiator” that was already uploaded. I then added text to the top and bottom of the image.

The second daily create was to elicit an emotional response with a picture. I chose grief. Grief is a multifaceted response to loss. A powerful emotion that people too often experience. I grieved when our family dog and cat died.

The third daily create was to make a photo “aged”. This was my favorite assignment of the week. I created an account on Pixlr.com and selected Pixlr Express as the web application I would use to import an image I found online of buffalo grazing. Once in PixlrExpress (https://pixlr.com/express/) I used a Too Old effect labeled “Gordon”. Next, I used a Vignette Overlay. Finally, I choose a border to place around the image to give it a old, distressed, and worn look. It was the first time using Pixlr to edit the photo.

My fourth daily create was to create a concrete poem. Before, I had never heard of such a poem, but now it is my favorite type of poem. A concrete poem is written in the shape of the object of which you are describing. Mine is about a Christmas tree and the Christmas spirit, so it was arranged in the shape of a Christmas tree

It is always fun to see other people’s work, especially for the same assignments because each person answers a question in a unique way. I learn almost as much from reading other blog posts than from the video’s themselves. I love seeing other people’s daily creates. I realize humans are very creative, and it is a shame that our society/culture does not show off our creativity nearly enough.

This week was a lot of audio, whether it be listening and reflecting on audio stories or creating my own audio assignments. All this being said it went well for the most part. I enjoyed watching Ira Glass’s videos on storytelling. It taught me a lot and I believe his content and advice will help me improve in the class. I enjoyed all three audio assignments as well as the daily creates. My least enjoyable assignment was the radio story reflection. As of now I have no questions from this week and none heading into next week.

Weekly Summary

What is storytelling?

In this unit I learned that my notion of storytelling is the traditional theme of storytelling. What I mean is that when I think of storytelling, I think of elder people sharing stories with younger folks so that when the younger folks grow up they can continue to pass down the stories. Everyday I am involved in storytelling. I always listen to or tell someone of my day or someone else’s. Storytelling applies to my interests because I am interested in coaching as an occupation. A big part of coaching is learning from others and using what you learned and then passing that down to others. For example, a coach of mine will tell me how he may run a certain drill and I will copy him and if someone asks me about the drill I will tell them how I came about it. I wrote a full reflection of my thoughts and ideas of storytelling and digital storytelling in my “Thoughts/Ideas” sub section of “Assignments

Daily Creates

This week I completed four daily creates. The first daily create was to create a uplifting message for a classmate who had lost all her work in #ds106. The second daily create was to add a personal line to Levato’s poem. The third tdc was write a short story about an ocean at the end of your backyard. Finally the last daily create of the week I did was pick a movie, replace the title with a single letter change and draw a scene of the new movie title. #tdc1342 of the movie title image was my favorite. I like drawing so this was an enjoyably and easy assignment. I liked this week of daily creates because it allowed for more freedom in terms of imagination and creativity.

Kurt Vonnegut “Shapes of Stories”

After watching Vonnegut’s presentation on YouTube, I was tasked with picking a movie that correlated to Vonnegut’s “Shapes of Stories”. I connected “The Blind Side” to Kurt’s Cinderella example. This was the first time I had heard of Kurt Vonnegut and reviewed anything of his work. His presentation did make sense to me as a way to analyze stories. Here is my graphic representation, it is a YouTube video of “Shapes of Stories”. Here is my full reflection of Kurt Vonnegut.

I recently came across an interview of the Thompson brothers. At the time of the video  they were lacrosse players at Albany University. It is a digital story because it is a source of technology and shares an aspect of their lives with viewers.

Appreciating Past DS106 Stories

Of the projects listed I chose “30,000 miles in 30 seconds(ish). This was my favorite story because it was the most interesting. I enjoyed the purpose behind the creation of the project, as well as the actual project itself. Seeing the images of each state and the differences of the landscapes was really neat. Here is my write up in detail of my thoughts/ideas of this story, 30,000 miles in 30 seconds

A Story in Five Frames

My story in five frames is of a college student moving into school. For me, move in day was difficult, but yet special. I am a homebody so going to an unfamiliar place, especially in a big city (SJU in Philadelphia) was nerve-wracking, and scary. I picked images that depicted each major stage of the move in process. The process includes leaving home, arriving on campus, moving into a dorm, meeting new people, and finally saying goodbye to family. I could not figure out how to share it in the group on flickr so I constructed it in my own blog. I did create an album of the five pictures “tell a story in five frames” in my flickr account. I also wrote a reflection.

I commented on five posts from classmates. I enjoy seeing other people’s work, it is interesting to see how someone else did an assignment differently than I may have I done. Also if I am having trouble understanding an assignment I can see what someone else did and that helps jumpstart my work. I replied to everyone who commented on my blog and twitter.

My experience with #ds106 is up and down. It was a lot of work and I am still struggling with some of the assignments. I meet with a tutor once or twice a week to ask questions how to install a plugin or how to do this or that. This week was challenging and confusing. In particular the story in five frames was frustrating because I could not figure out to add my story in the flickr group. However I realized I could post it in my blog so that eased my mind. I need help with using tech applications such as photoshop and iMovie. The Vonnegut assignment was hard because I had to figure out to make a movie to demonstrate my connection which took me a long time. I am trying my best though!
